The Midst of Things is a song about coping. It examines the complexities of living in a black body and navigating the stresses and trauma that come with it. The feeling of constant scrutiny. Having to “code switch” in order to get a job, or not be stereotyped.

“I didn’t need your love… but I’m gonna need your love.. when I didn’t need your love..”

I wrote this song during the peak of the pandemic. Minneapolis was literally burning.
After the murder of George Floyd the city was demanding meaningful change. Dollars and donations were pouring in and corporate virtue signaling was at its peak. This song examines white guilt and the propensity to throw money around rather than dismantling systems of oppression.

“Soak my soul in “simple green”… a simile for your sympathy..”

This song gave me space to move through some of my pain and vent my frustrations. I hope it can do the same for you.
